Encouraging a Multilingual Australia

Australia as a multilingual country is being discussed more and more. Here is a recent article by Roland Sussex who argues that we urgently need to become multilingual.  He concludes: “But, most important, we need to do it. Now. With most of the English-speaking world, we are are a long way back in the pack. Unless we become multilingual as well as multicultural, we will be a sideshow at someone else’s fair.”

I also said that I would put up the link to the Michael Clyne book called ‘Australia’s Language Potential’ (2005) that I referred to in the lecture. It gives a good overview of the range of community languages here in Australia.
